A sunny Easter Sunday at the Royal Overseas House in St James’s was the setting for the Fifth Russian Song Festival and Contest, organised by Eurolog UK. This year’s festival marked the 50th anniversary of the world’s first manned space by Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin in April 1961, and the showing of original press footage of the event invited the spectators – British as well as Russian – to share in the nostalgia of this momentous occasion.

No time was lost, however, in introducing and welcoming the star performer of the festival, the much acclaimed and hugely talented Baritone Sergey Zakharov. An exceptional performance was given of a selection of well-loved and timeless Russian classics, such as Vecherni Zvon (“Evening Bells”), Gori, Gori, moya zvezda (“Shine, my Star”) Vdol po Piterskoy (“Along Piterskaya Street”) and Zvezdy na nebe (“Stars in the Sky”). This was a truly outstanding performance and Zakharov is a true Russian entertainer, not only in his inimitable and superior talent as a singer but also as one who instantly connects with and charms his audience.

A huge name in Russia, Zakharov remains a hidden gem to western audiences. The more is the pity; as with so many other Russian artists, his presence would greatly enrich the world of entertainment anywhere this side of St Petersburg.

Conscious of the daunting task they faced in following such a magnificent performance, the twenty or so contestants nevertheless greatly impressed both audience and judges with their varied, lively and soulful renditions either of well-known and established works, or of songs composed for the occasion by themselves.

There were three main categories of song: classical, folk music and bard song and contemporary song in both adult and children’s categories.

All performances were expertly assessed by a panel of experienced and professional musicians, presided by Sergey Zakharov himself. Other members were: Seva Novgorodtsev, BBC presenter; Alexander Naumenko, tenor, the Royal Opera; Alexander Titov, musician with the groups Aquarium and Kino; Igor Seliutin, musician, composer and producer; David Kudykov, president of APIA. Awards for third, second and first prizes were presented by the panel and the Chair of Eurolog UK, Olga Bramley.

First prizes were awarded to: Dan Hawkins (classical), Folk Ensemble “Bylina”, Dmitri Budac (bard song), Elizaveta Nidzelskaya (contemporary song, young talent), Maria Kolpakchi (folk song, young talent).

The event was concluded by a drinks reception for VIP guests and participants with a beautiful cake.

Next 6th, Festival and Contest will be taking place on the last Sunday of April 2012.
